WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS:

 11:00 am to 12:30 pm

West Virginia Fiddle Tunes with Jimmy Triplett. Come learn a tune or two! We’ll work on a few of my favorite WV fiddle tunes. My sources include Melvin Wine, the Hammons Family, and Ernie Carpenter. We'll talk about bowing, ornamentation, and tunings, and I’ll and give you some listening suggestions. Bring a recording device, since I hope to do a short repertoire session at the end of the workshop. For intermediate to advanced players.

Old-Time Banjo with Andy FitzGibbon: The class will teach some of the banjo tunes and styles used throughout West Virginia.   We will learn some solo banjo tunes, and will also discuss techniques for using the banjo as a backup instrument.  The class will be geared towards intermediate students, but any level is welcome.  Recording devices (audio or video) are encouraged.

Old Time Country Singing with Alice Gerrard: First, find your voice, then give it some style—from simple to more complex—the devil is in the details. Bring some kind of recording device if you can.  All levels welcome.

Slow Jam led by John Blasquez – FREE admission – all welcome!

1:00 pm to 2:30 pm:

Old-Time Fiddle with Scott Prouty:  This class will focus on learning fiddle techniques to help develop your old-time ‘sound’ while also learning a few catchy tunes.  We’ll be geared towards an intermediate level, but anybody from 'Advanced Beginners' on up are welcome (Advanced Beginners know some tunes and can handle their instrument but may not be comfortable leading jams). Documentation of all kinds for learning purposes is welcome.

Old-Time Banjo with Candy Goldman:  Candy, assisted by Jimmy Triplett, will focus on the interplay between fiddle and banjo, repertoire, and how to find the magical groove that brings the music to another level.  Come prepared to learn tunes especially well-suited to fiddle and banjo along with tips on how to find the groove.  For intermediate and up banjo players.  Recording device strongly suggested!

Duet Singing with Cliff Perry & Laurel Bliss: You’ll learn several songs and work on finding your voice in singing duets. Cliff and Laurel, in 30 years of singing together, have devoted much time to choosing keys, deciding on parts, phrasing, keeping time and rhythm, style, and other subtle aspects of song. Duet singing offers a lot of freedom and flexibility for the singers, plus the usual challenges in making harmonious music! All are welcome.

Old-Time Guitar - Gaither Carlton Tunes with Eric Thompson: Learn some of the marvelous melodies that Doc Watson played and recorded with his father-in-law, old-time fiddler Gaither Carlton.  These delighful archaic fiddle tunes have take on a special life when combined with Doc's elegant, exciting, yet easy guitar parts, which cover both the melody and rhythm.  Geared towards intermediate-advanced level, but "advanced beginners" are welcome. Recording devices encouraged.
