[Berkeley Old-Time Music Convention]

Hi folks,

Just a reminder that the Todalo Shakers, with special guest Larry 
Hanks, will be making a rare public appearance tomorrow night (Thurs. 
Sept. 13) at the Freight & Salvage, as part of the opening night 
concert of the Berkeley Old Time Music Convention.  Also appearing are 
the young ballad singer Donna Ray Norton (who sings unaccompanied 
traditional songs, most of which have been in her family for many 
generations) and the North Carolina fiddler Rich Hartness & Friends 
(the friends are Tolly Tolleson, Brendan Doyle, and Maxine Gerber).  
The show starts at 8.  Tickets are $15.50 in advance, $16.50 at the

The Todalo Shakers are:  Frannie Leopold, vocals and guitar; W.B. Reid, 
vocals, banjo-guitar (affectionally dubbed "The Enforcer" - when you 
hear it, you'll know why!), and fiddle; Eric Thompson, vocals, 
mandolin, guitar and tenor banjo; Suzy Thompson, vocals and fiddle;  
Steven Strauss, vocals and bowed bass (it sounds just like a jug!); and 
special guest Larry Hanks, bass vocals, jew's harp, and kazoo.

Frannie's from Mendocino and W.B. is from Seattle, so we don't have the 
opportunity to play together as much as we'd like.  Together, we love 
to play music from the old time jug bands and string bands like the 
Memphis Jug Band, the Mississippi Sheiks, the Grinnell Giggers, etc.  
This is good time, funky 1920s party music and we hope you'll be able 
to party with us tomorrow night!

This will be the opening concert of the Berkeley Old Time Music 
Convention -- if you haven't already, please check out the website:

contest, workshops, an open mic cabaret and a Saturday night square 
dance.
