Workshop Descriptions:
11:00 to 12:30 PM
Old Time Fiddle with Brad Leftwich: Learn the licks and tricks the
old-timers used to get "that sound." For intermediate level players.
Bowing, tunings, ornaments, and more!

Old Time Guitar with W.B . Reid
Learn the basics of backup guitar for old time tunes and songs. We'll
cover chords, bass notes and runs, and playing with a strong, solid
rhythm. The workshop will accommodate a wide range of skill levels
among the participants, from folks who just know a couple of chords to
advanced players wanting to improve their understanding of old time
accompaniment.

Old Time Banjo with Candy Goldman: Clyde Davenport banjo tunes! Learn
some favorite tunes and songs from the playing of fiddle/banjo master
Clyde Davenport. We'll explore his unusual repertoire and try some
interesting tunings. This class is for experienced clawhammer banjo
players.
About Candy Goldman: Candy has been the accompanist of choice for
old-time fiddle greats Melvin Wine and Clyde Davenport. Known for her
patience and clarity, she has taught at music camps and privately, and
teaches (with the Canote twins) a long-running and ever-popular old
time stringband class in Seattle.

Ballad singing with Donna Ray Norton: Hear, sing and learn about the
ballads of the British Isles from a present-day Southern Appalachian
eighth-generation ballad singer. Donna will give a brief history of
the tradition and will sing some songs from her "family songbook".
Audience participation in the ballad singing will be invited!!! --with
time for questions and answers. Open to everyone.

1:00 PM to 2:30 PM

Old Time Fiddle with Rich Hartness: Come learn a handful of fun tunes
from the Carolina and Virginias. We'll embellish them with double stops
for fuller, richer sounds. We'll ponder ideas for becoming more fluid,
learning tunes by ear and learning how to use your very own ears to get
yourself and band mates all better in tune. All levels are welcome
though we'll move quickly.

Old Time Banjo with Tom Sauber: In this advanced class we will get
deeply into the nuts and bolts of the Round Peak style to see how it's
possible to play lots of melody while sustaining a strong, rhythmical
pulse which is so important in the fiddle-banjo and string band
ensembles. As time and inclination leads us, we can work on repertoire
or explore the delights of two-finger picking.

Country Singing with Alice Gerrard: First, find your voice, then give
it some style—from simple to more complex—the devil is in the details.
Bring some kind of recording device if you can. All levels welcome.

Slow Jam led by Bonnie Zahnow: FREE! Bonnie Zahnow has a special gift
for encouraging beginning and/or shy musicians with her open and
welcoming manner. She performs with her husband W.B. Reid and with Lee
Stripling.
