Hi there,
One final reminder about the great festivities at the Berkeley Old Time
Convention this weekend! Shows on Thursday and Friday at the Freight, the
String Band Contest at the Farmer's Market (City Center Park) on Saturday from
11 AM to 3 PM, the Big Square Dance on Saturday night at Ashkenaz, workshops in
private homes on Sunday, followed by the Old Time Cabaret starting at 4 PM at
the Jupiter (downtown Berkeley) on Sunday.
We have lined some wonderful emcees for the shows at the Freight. Thursday
night's show, with the Road Oilers, Larry Hanks, and the Stairwell Sisters,
will be emceed by Peter Thompson, of "Bluegrass Breakdown" which airs on KALW
every Saturday. Friday night's show, with Eric & Suzy Thompson, Kenny Hall
Band, and Mike Seeger, will be emceed by the legendary Chris Strachwitz of
Arhoolie Records. I am so excited about these shows, which include some of my
early influences in old time music -- Mike Seeger, Mike Drayton (of the Road
Oilers), Larry Hanks, Kenny Hall.
We are still looking for volunteers to help with teardown after the String Band
Contest. This would involve staying around at the park until around 4 or so,
or until everything is cleaned up and put away. Volunteers will get admission
to one event of their choice (a Freight show or the dance). You need to be
able to do a little lifting (packing up folding chairs, for example).
I should mention that, in my view at least, doing cleanup on these kinds of
music events is a most holy and honorable job. The Hudson River Revival is a
very large folk festival, north of New York City. This festival was started by
Pete Seeger and when I was last there, Pete's wife, Toshi, was still the head
of the garbage crew. It was amazing and inspiring to see her going around
picking up the trash.
I don't mind picking up the trash after the contest (I've done it the past 2
years), but some help would be very much appreciated.
Whether or not you are able to volunteer, I hope to see you at some of the
doings this weekend. As Dave Murray puts it, "We're gonna have us some
goooooooooooood music!"
Best,
Suzy Thompson
